On Monday, December 5, 2022, Cheryl Goff was recognized at the CCPS School Board meeting for coordinating our community pen pal project.
Clayton County community leaders, business owners, retired teachers, and other volunteers write to our students as an anonymous pen pal throughout the school year. The children write back, sharing their lives, concerns and stories. They learn the form for a friendly letter, practice their writing skills, and learn social skills. In May, the project concludes with a pen pal reveal party, hosted by Alpha Iota, providing the opportunity for the adult volunteers and students to finally meet in person. |
Chapter President Dr. Vance Wallace and Anita Thomaston attended a celebration for supporters of Ferst Readers of Henry County on January 24. Good News from Members
Deborah Bhanojirow, a Special Education Teacher at Kendrick Middle School, has a dream. She is committed to the idea of sending 1 million pencils to students in Haiti. Last year, she challenged the students at Kendrick to donate pencils, hoping they would reach out to the children of Haiti. And they did! She sent 26,500 pencils to the country last May. She has now renewed her mission and has collected 1,592 pencils from future teachers studying at Clayton State College and CVS Pharmacies. Linda Holcomb, a missionary working with the Association of Baptist World Evangelists, will be delivering the pencils to schools in Haiti. Holcomb works as part of a medical team and has assisted in several countries such as Jamaica, Romania, Peru, Brazil, Moldova, and Liberia.
